How can I get the integrated webcam to work ? and how can I test it under SUSE ?
The webcam doesn't show anywhere in the device manager.

Also, could you please suggest a video chat software for Suse, something similar to iChat with video chat (I don't want Skype...)

Many thanks...

Microphone doesn't work in Skype nor is it even listed anywhere else, though I do have sound...?!?!?

I'm very, very disappointed!!!! : ((( ((

I don't think that HP is selling their Ubuntu edition, having half of the hardware-stuff they stuffed it with not working!

Anyone please - tell me there is a way to get it all working!

(Honor to everyone who contributes to any part of any Linux distro. But this is the reason why people /simple users/ get scared and decide to close their WINDOWS before LINUX. They don't want to spend their time to become an IT professional before they can go online or have a video chat with their friends using skype!)

Most of the things you will find written in Wiki and Forum on the 'net are about 8.04 - you could use those directions; or
Do a distribution upgrade to 8.10 - then nearly everything will "just work" - let us know if you have any problems then.

I've had great success installing Ubuntu 8.10 from a USB stick. I only had to mess around to make the microphone work - graphics were fine using Mikez's xorg.conf. Just remember that he's spend a LONG time testing it and that it isn't really worth editing it yourself unless you feel like some pain!

So, here, I think, are the most relevant wiki pages for installing Ubuntu and making it work

1. How to make an Ubuntu USB stick
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Insta ... omUSBStick

I used UNetbootin and it was very easy and didn't even erase the other things on my memory stick (though MAKE SURE you have backed everything up! there is no guarantee about that at all)

Once you've made a bootable USB stick you have to press F9 at the 'HP' screen - and then select the USB stick as the boot device

Now, I typed 'xforcevesa' (as a kernel argument) in to make sure the graphics for the installer worked, but I am not sure this is required...

Now you can shrink your original SUSE install down and install Ubuntu on the remaining free space - I have done this and got both Ubuntu and Suse coexisting

So, install Ubuntu 8.10, and reboot. Better instructions for the installation can be found here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTe ... 0Mini-Note

I skipped the 'pre boot' section of that howto and used netbootin instead

The one extra step I would suggest is getting the VIA driver from their website and installing it.

Start here
ubuntu/ubuntu-xorg-conf-please-t625.html

I _will_ put this all on a wiki sometime very soon. I think that Ubuntu wiki page could do with a little update about the Via driver...

Oh, and the microphone:
ubuntu/skype-microphone-problem-t629.html should have the solution

Hope that helps
